Agricultural land use

Coordinator: University of Turin, DI.VA.PRA. Department

The terracements in the Alps have hosted for centuries the agricultural activities that sustained the population. Still, at the present time, the cultivations to plant in a terraced area must be carefully studied, due to ruin of may terracements and weakness of the agricultural market. The aim must now be cultivation and promotion of quality products, able to sustain the local economy.

  • Summary of the discussion in Genoa

I am trying to summarize here below what said in the work session in Genoa, to start a deeper discussion about the point that remained open.

The first point that has emerged is the problem of mechanization of agriculture in terraced areas, as a major issues for maintenance of terracements :
    - Mechanization of agricultural production can be an important instrument for recovery of abandoned areas to an active use, while used respectfully within the landscape

Aim of the project if to produce a study on requirements, advantages and modality of the use of machines on terracements, with the aim of offering a tool to producers for choosing the most affective and sustainable form of production.

All the guys that took part to the discussion in the afternoon in Genoa are invited to give their response to this summary.

  • Agricultural land use

This is the first message on this forum. The goal is to characterize agricultural productions in our terraced areas. Of course, to attain this goal, we should have to use a lot of descriptors but this is not an agricultural study.
In a territorial scale I think those are some good parameters to describe agricultural production:
    1. Main cultivation and its cropped surface
    2. Secondary cultivation/s and its cropped surface
    3. Derived products by transformation, drying, etc…
    4. Minimum information on cultivation techniques
    5. Presence of irrigation network and irrigation method/s
    6. Biological agriculture (certified)
I have organised those descriptors in a very simple table that should be used in the description form of the project.

    AGRICULTURAL CHARACTERIZATION
    A. MAIN CULTIVATION
    Cropped surface (ha)
    Derived products
    Cultivation technique:
    1. Soil tillage
    2. Fertilization
    3. Weeding
    4. Pesticide use
    1. YES/NOT
    2. YES/NOT

    3. YES/NOT
    4. YES/NOT
    Irrigation network YES NOT
    Irrigated surface (ha)
    Irrigation method/s:
    1. flooding
    2. sprinkling
    3. dripping
    1. YES/NOT
    2. YES/NOT
    3. YES/NOT
    Biological agriculture (certified) YES NOT
    B. SECONDARY CULTIVATION 1
    Cropped surface (ha)
    Derived products
    Cultivation technique:
    1. Soil tillage
    2. Fertilization
    3. Weeding
    4. Pesticide use
    1. YES/NOT
    2. YES/NOT
    3. YES/NOT

    4. YES/NOT
    Irrigation network YES NOT
    Irrigated surface (ha)
    Irrigation method/s:
    1. flooding
    2. sprinkling
    3. dripping
    1. YES/NOT
    2. YES/NOT
    3. YES/NOT
    Biological agriculture (certified) YES NOT

Another problem, that I think is more important than the simple description, is how to use the terraced lands to keep them alive.
I don’t think that insert another table and/or another part in the description form should be good because I believe that this part should be developed in the WP 6.
The agricultural use of this terraced lands is basic to preserve them from abandon, but this use must be economically profitable. This is why it is necessary to do an agronomical and economical study to define which kind of cultivations are possible and to compare the profitability of different cultivations and also the possibility to obtain transformed products which are usually more rentable.

I’m sorry but it is impossibile to post a table so, whom are interested in please send me an e-mail

    The discussion is open.
